The boiler grant is non-repayable, and there are no complicated terms and conditions to worry about. If you do qualify you could get a new boiler (and possibly heating controls) installed at no, or minimal, cost to yourself. Your level of funding will be determined by your home’s current efficiency and the state of your boiler – this means an energy assessment will be required. This is completely free.

Gas boilers are currently the only boilers covered by the scheme.

Why the fuss about underfloor insulation?

You may also have your walls and ceiling insulated, but many people forget to insulate under their floor. Is your property suitable for underfloor insulation?

Before applying for this grant you need to work out if your property is suitable for underfloor insulation or not – if your home has a cellar, basement, or underground crawlspace you will more than likely have a suitable floor. Similarly, if your home is built on a slope, it also has a high chance of qualifying.

Suspended timber ground floors are common in older types of property; this is where the floorboards rest over the joists, which can cause them to lose a large amount of heat. Air/ventilation bricks on the exterior walls can also indicate you might qualify. To be sure, however, you will need a full survey.

How do you qualify for the underfloor insulation grant?

If your home was built later than the 1980’s it is very unlikely you will qualify for the grant, as most houses built afterwards will have solid concrete floors. If your home is built on a slope or has a basement/cellar, you have a high likelihood of successfully applying.

Note that at least 1 metre of underfloor headroom is required, as is hatch access. Underfloor insulation must be applicable to at least two third’s of the house’s footprint, and you must receive the EC03 benefit.

You must also be the occupying homeowner, and the property needs to be located in England, Scotland, or Wales and gas heated. If you have already had UFI in the past, you may be eligible to have it updated.
