What exactly is cavity wall insulation?

If your property was built after the 1920s, the chances are it has cavity walls, with a hollow centre or cavity between the inner and outer walls. Cavity wall insulation fills the gap with a special insulation material. This is usually made up of mineral wool, polyurethane foam or polystyrene beads. This type of material helps stop heat escaping from your property, thus making it easier to keep your home warm and help reduce your energy bills. It also helps to reduce condensation inside your property, which is traditionally one of the main issues with cavity walls.

Insulating cavity walls is a quick and simple process that involves drilling very small holes into the outside walls of your house and filling them with insulating material. In many cases, the job can be completed in just a couple of hours and shouldn’t cause any mess.

How much could is it that I could potentially save?

A typical uninsulated home in Scotland loses as much as 35% of all heat through the outer walls. With cavity wall insulation installed in the walls of your property, you’ll be able to keep more of this heat inside your home and use your central heating less, resulting in lower annual fuel bills.

For the average detached house, cavity wall insulation could help you save around £250 a year. A semi-detached house could save as much as £145 a year, and a bungalow £100 a year.
