What is the boiler replacement grant?
The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme is government established to assist lower-income households access to a range of home improvements. This allows them to more efficiently heat their homes, lower their energy bills, and cut their carbon footprint. If you meet the necessary criteria, and you have a non-condensing boiler that’s over five years old, you could get it replaced at no cost to you.
The boiler grant is non-repayable, and there are no complicated terms and conditions to worry about. If you qualify you could get a new boiler (and possibly heating controls) installed at no, or minimal, cost to you. Your level of funding will be determined by your home’s current efficiency and the state of your boiler – this means an energy assessment will be required and is completely free.
Gas boilers are currently the only boilers covered by the scheme at this time.
How do you qualify for the grant?
You could have your boiler replaced for no, or little, cost if you have the right combination of income-related benefits that you collect. This could be tax credits, Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Universal Credit, (Personal Independence Payment) PIP, or income support.
It is important to know that your current boiler must be a gas boiler, and over five years old. If your boiler is under five years old the presumption is that it would be more economical and environmentally friendly to repair it, rather than fully replacing it completely.
Depending on the benefits that you receive, you might either qualify automatically or be subject to further requirements, such as responsibility for a child under 16 years of age, or be a certain age yourself and you must also be a homeowner.

How much or new boilers normally?
There’s no easy answer, as boiler models vary, and it depends on the type of boiler that is suitable for your home. In general, most gas combi boiler / regular boiler upgrades can be anywhere between £1000 and £2500. For more complex system boilers, premium brands, or in instances where the upgrade is more complicated, it can cost £3000+.
